Brucelee Aguilar-Rivera, SUDRC

Counselor

My name is Brucelee Aguilar and I’m a 41 year-old recovering addict. I was born and raised in East Los Angeles, California with five brothers and no sisters. I grew up in an environment where gangs and drugs were the norm and I ended up in the juvenile justice system from the age of 12 through 18 and shortly after I ended up in the California Department of Corrections. I started using crack-cocaine, and Crystal Meth at the age of 14, however, after being sent to prison “I was introduced to heroin” and My life was changed instantly. Heroin became my whole purpose in prison. After spending 16 years in prison, I came home addicted, lost and afraid, because addiction had become everything to me. I took to the streets because I didn’t want my children or my family to see me on drugs, I lost myself, I was miserable, I did anything and everything to feed my sickness and I didn’t know how to stop or where to find help? I remember feeling so hopeless, powerless and ashamed because I didn’t know how to stop using… I chose Heroin over my children and everything else.  I hit rock-bottom, I was broken and so lost.   Then I was granted the gift of desperation and God’s mercy. I am here Alive and Clean off of drugs and alcohol because of my Higher Power and I write this today to offer hope and spread the word that recovery is possible.
